There will be traffic management (TMP) in place leading up to and during the Matariki Arrowtown Kā-Muriwai event on 28 June 2024.
The Southern Safety Traffic management team will support this alongside our event volunteers during the duration of the event. Event volunteers will assist residents and businesses who need access through the roadblock to their homes or business, and to ensure free movement of buses. Ramshaw Lane will still be accessible for buses and parking.
If you have any questions, please contact Ann Wyatt, Event Manager.

Arrowtown is one of the fastest growing towns in New Zealand:
1948---------120 people
1989------850 people
2015----2600 people
2021-----3900 people
There has been a fire station on the current site since 1890. The hand drawn hose reel was used until the 1940’s.
The Maori name for the river is Haihainui which means ‘Big Scratches’.
The Chinese Settlement was established in 1867-8 and was in existence until the mid 1930’s. The site underwent an archaeological excavation in 1984.
The first jail in Arrowtown was simply a log. You were chained up to it. The later stone jail still exists and is in Cardigan Street. It is New Zealand’s 4th oldest jail.
There are two theories as to why the town is named Arrowtown. One is that the river behind the town flows swiftly like an arrow.
